In his keynote speech, Dr. Ayodele Odusola highlighted the media's crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the Golden Conifer in Harare, the 2023-2024 National Journalism and Media Awards were celebrated, highlighting the pivotal role of media in transforming Zimbabwean society.
This significant event, organized by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists, featured prominent figures such as Dr. Ayodele Odusola, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim, who served as the keynote speaker and guest of honor. Also in attendance were Zimbabwe’s Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Honourable Dr. Jenfan Muswere, Mr. Nick Mangwana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Swedish Ambassador His Excellency Per Lindgarde, and UN Heads of Agencies. Together, they underscored the media’s essential contributions to crafting a sustainable future through informed journalism.
In his keynote speech, Dr. Ayodele Odusola highlighted the media's crucial role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He commended Zimbabwean journalists for being not just news reporters but also advocates for change, bringing stories of resilience and innovation to the forefront amidst socio-economic challenges. These narratives, featuring everything from youths in ICT hubs to resourceful farmers, offer a powerful counterbalance to political sensationalism, inspiring hope and progress within communities.
This year's awards ceremony, themed “Empowering Marginalized Voices, Navigating Gender Dynamics, and Harnessing AI-Driven Journalism,” encouraged media professionals to amplify underrepresented voices, address gender disparities, and embrace AI-driven journalism for ethical advancement and common good. The United Nations’ collaboration with Zimbabwe’s media is further strengthened through initiatives such as an upcoming media seminar, designed to provide journalists with hands-on exposure to UN-supported development projects.
The government echoed these goals, with Minister Muswere emphasizing plans to enhance information access through legislation and collaboration with media organizations on ethical regulation. This aims to create a balanced ecosystem that supports journalistic freedom while protecting public interest. Minister Muswere referenced the media indaba, where Mr. Nick Mangwana engaged all media houses to establish a regulatory framework that promotes both media freedom and public interest, thus nurturing quality journalism.
A central topic of discussion was the integration of artificial intelligence in journalism. With UNESCO's support, the UN is crafting guidelines for AI-driven journalism, partnering with regional educational institutions. While AI presents opportunities for innovation, consensus was that human oversight is vital to uphold ethical standards.
Celebrated human interest stories included community engagement and rural development focused on agricultural development and the innovative use of traditional practices. Another noteworthy narrative highlighted young journalists utilizing digital platforms to address gender disparities, ensuring women's voices are included in national dialogues.
This event also signified the UN’s commitment to bolster media support through awards and capacity-building initiatives, such as those for Gender-Based Violence and Maternal Health, supported by UNFPA. These recognitions not only honor outstanding reporting but also motivate journalists to pursue vital work in areas crucial to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
As the evening concluded, Dr. Odusola and Minister Muswere congratulated the award recipients, encouraging them to continue crafting narratives that enrich Zimbabwe’s national and global discourse. Through dedicated journalism and strategic partnerships, Zimbabwe’s media is emerging as a powerful driver for sustainable development and inclusive progress, leveraging AI-driven journalism for the common good, and promoting community mobilization to tackle emergencies and climatic shocks.
