Renewable Revolution: Government of Zimbabwe, UN, Partners Convene Game-Changing Energy Conference

28 February 2024, Victoria Falls - In a remarkable gathering at Elephant Hills Hotel in Victoria Falls, Mr. Edward Kallon, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, addressed delegates at the Renewable Energy Conference that kicked off on Wednesday. 

Highlighting the pivotal role of renewable energy in driving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and combating climate change, Mr. Kallon commended the collaboration between the Ministry of Energy and Power Development and Alpha Media Holding Group to promote sustainable energy in Zimbabwe. Stressing the importance of policymakers and the media uniting to push for a transformative agenda, he underlined the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions.

Despite energy shortages impacting crucial sectors like agriculture, mining, and tourism in Zimbabwe, initiatives are in motion to boost renewable energy capacity by 2030. While acknowledging challenges such as insufficient financing for renewable energy projects, Mr. Kallon praised the Government of Zimbabwe for establishing a conducive environment that encourages the adoption of renewable energy through diverse measures.

The UN in Zimbabwe has been actively engaged in supporting the government to tackle these challenges through initiatives like the Zimbabwe Joint SDG Fund Programme, aimed at leveraging investments in renewable energy to meet the SDGs. A notable initiative is the launch of the Renewable Energy Fund, kickstarted with initial funding from the UN Global SDGs Fund, focusing on blended finance and incubation support for projects that offer both financial returns and social impact.

In his address, Mr. Kallon highlighted the interconnected nature of the Six Transitions proposed by the UN Secretary-General to expedite progress towards achieving the SDGs by 2030. These transitions, spanning areas such as Food Systems, Access to Affordable Energy, Education, Digital Connectivity, Jobs and Social Protection, Climate Action, and Biodiversity, are viewed as crucial avenues for investment to hasten progress towards sustainable development in Zimbabwe and worldwide.

Calling on stakeholders to unite behind the implementation of forward-thinking Government of Zimbabwe’s policies, Mr. Kallon envisioned a future in Zimbabwe powered by clean energy. By fostering cooperation among policymakers, institutions, the private sector, UN agencies, donors, and civil society, he highlighted the potential to drive sustainable development and environmental stewardship in the country.

The Renewable Energy Conference which runs from 27 February to 01 March coinciding with the 56th Session of the Africa Ministers of Finance in Victoria Falls provides a platform for discussion, collaboration, and dedication towards steering Zimbabwe towards a greener and more sustainable future. 

The event brought together over 300 delegates comprised of representatives from government, Development Partners, donors, the private sector, media including dignitaries such as Honorable E Moyo - Minister of Energy and Power Development, Dr. Eng. G. Magombo - Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, H.E. Jobst von Kirchman - EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation, Isiah Mashinya - Chief Operations Officer of Old Mutual Zimbabwe, and K Mafukidze - CEO of Alpha Media Holdings Group.
